Artist’s
Statement

Until now my work has been handcrafted furniture that was inspired by elements from Danish and Mid-Century modern design, as well as, rock formations that occur along the shorelines of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. This influence can be seen in the sculptural lines, defined edges and simplicity of my furniture. I enjoyed every aspect of making furniture - from design to lumber selection to the labor intensive process of carving and shaping domestic hardwoods into graceful and elegant forms. I tried to achieve a balance between light and heavy elements by interconnecting hard and soft lines that make each piece pleasing to the eye and touch.

My education and professional background lie in the fields of photography and architecture. I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Communications and worked in the commercial photography industry for a few years until I decided to go back to school for architecture. After receiving my Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee School of Architecture in 1993, I was involved in the design, planning and construction phases of a variety of projects. I also enjoyed teaching design at the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay. Over time, I discovered my true passion of designing and crafting handmade objects.

Our family is currently living in England where I have begun to focus my interest on woodturning. I have been exploring England's magnificent old architecture and cities that evoke a deep artisan history. The rolling green countryside with its gnarly yew and oak trees, in addition to being very picturesque, create an almost surreal environment. And the rugged English shorelines are very similar to the shorelines of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior that are represented in my most recent furniture which was inspired by the interaction of waves and cliff shores. I’m interested in the subtractive elements of nature, such as the effects that wind and water have as they erode away rock formations, sand dunes and driftwood. I see turning as being a similar subtractive process and anticipate my work to incorporate timber and techniques that reflect those forces from nature.
